The Sapphire's True Chosen One - Part 5

Sapphire 8 Rematch: Saturday, July 5, 2008

Independence Day in the United States is over.  It's time to settle this once and for all.

The Sapphire Necklace, said to hold the foundation of the earth, is still looking for a foundation to hold itself.  And the same number of candidates are among the eligible.  In a unique turn of events, this version of the Sapphire necklace has its own qualifications.  For Kyou Fujibayashi, who is currently wearing a duplicate, this is her chance to prove that the Sapphire Necklace belongs to her all along.  But Haruhi Suzumiya and Konata Izumi, among five others, are there to play spoiler.  With candidates already falling out of the race for not only the necklaces but the tiara itself, each match is now more crucial than ever, and this opportunity doesn't come along often.  Now this time, the true owner of the Sapphire Necklace will be decided, and the winner will prove that she holds the privilege to bear the foundations of this earth.

Arena 1
#6 Haruhi Suzumiya (38-3) vs. #3 Kagami Hiiragi (39-2)

The only person other than Kyou who has something to prove is Haruhi.  With the Sapphire Necklace now flashed in front of her eyes, she holds the best chance of of winning the real Sapphire Necklace, only needing to outdo Kyou in order to win the necklace.  However, a Sapphire 8 rematch means a rematch with the hottest girl in ISML at this moment - Kagami, who hasn't lost a match since Topaz 2, not counting the "fixed" match with Haruhi.  For Haruhi to prove that she belongs where she belongs at this moment, it will take yet another victory over Kagami to prove that she is most deserving of the Sapphire Necklace.  But could Kagami pull this off or will another candidate be knocked into the three-loss column?

Arena 4
Nayuki Minase (26-15) vs. #1 Kyou Fujibayashi (39-2)

If this match is of any interest at all, it's how far Kyou can distance herself from Nayuki, whom is a much easier opponent than say... Kagami.  There looks to be no question (at least from the majority standpoint) that Kyou would win this rematch.  However, Nayuki is very determined to prove that she can do what Ayu did a while back - pull an upset from a handful of ranks back.  With Kyou paying more attention to Shana in Arena 30 than Nayuki, that could possibly happen.  But will an upset of epic proportions open the door for other candidates or can Kyou successfully prove that the Sapphire Necklace is hers once and for all?

Arena 5
#12 Konata Izumi (30-11) vs. #8 Kotomi Ichinose (36-5)

For the first time, Arenas 5 and 6 play hosts to feature matchups, something that probably won't happen again unless a similar situation to two weeks ago happens.  Third place in the Sapphire standings is Konata, who apparently seems to be worried more about Shana than Kotomi, who is an extremely strong opponent in this playing field.  All she needs to do is pick up about 100 votes plus the margin that either Kyou or Shana will obtain and edge out Kotomi.  However, Kotomi is no pushover, and she will have her own reasons for taking Konata down, most notably trying to avoid her first double-elimination match in the end - against 2005 Saimoe champion Nanoha.  Will Konata win her necklace or will Kotomi play the role of spoiler and possibly even help her classmate Kyou?

Arena 6
Nagi Sanzen'in (28-13) vs. #2 Fate Testarossa (39-2)

Questionable decision whether this match should be a featured match, but Arena 30 stands no chance of being featured at all.  Not only that, but Fate is mathematically still eligible for the Sapphire Necklace.  Though it isn't likely to happen, anything is possible.  But Fate is concerned about one thing - reaching the #1 rank for the first time in her newborn career in ISML, and with a possible long-term place in this prestigious league, she wants to prove that she is the strongest character in this league.  However, 2007 Saimoe Japan runner up Nagi is no easy match, but will this battle of runner-ups be a turn for the ages or will Fate win and be that much closer to being number 1?
